Bruneret messing greb: det varme udtryk i hjemmet

What is burnished brass?

Here, burnished brass describes brass with a darkened, aged-looking finish. The exact colour, surface treatment and any protective coating depend on the product. The name alone does not tell you whether a handle is lacquered or how it will age.

Do not assume that the finish will remain identical for five or ten years. Use, cleaning and the surrounding environment can affect its appearance. Check the manufacturer's description and care instructions for the particular handle. Read more about brass patina.

Where does the finish work well?

  • Dark grey or black kitchens: brown-toned metal adds a warm detail to deep colours.
  • Natural wood: the finish complements warm timber tones.
  • Classic interiors: an aged appearance can suit traditional furniture and cabinetry.
  • White kitchens: darker handles create a clear contrast against pale fronts.

For a bathroom, choose fittings specifically suitable for the intended conditions rather than judging suitability by colour. Explore bathroom accessories and check individual product specifications.

Burnished, polished or brushed brass?

Burnished brass has a darker, aged-looking character. Polished brass offers a brighter, reflective surface, while brushed brass has a fine directional texture and a softer reflection.

These descriptions concern appearance; they do not establish a universal maintenance ranking. Lacquer, other surface treatments and the manufacturer's instructions also matter. Polished brass does not automatically require daily polishing, and a brushed or dark finish is not automatically fingerprint-proof. Compare the options in our guide to brass kitchen handles.

Choosing a shape and size

Compare the current burnished brass handle range. Bar handles provide a defined grip; knobs create a smaller visual detail. Edge or profile handles have different mounting requirements, so check the individual design before replacing existing fittings.

For handles with two fixing points, measure the distance between the centres of the existing holes. Do not confuse hole centres with overall length. Sizes such as 96, 128 and 160 mm are examples, not a promise that every model comes in those sizes. Check projection, finger clearance, screw length and front thickness too. Using burnished brass in the kitchen

Pair darker handles with white fronts for contrast, or with grey and green fronts for a quieter combination. A timber worktop or oak shelving can reinforce the warm palette. Repeating a finish across handles and knobs creates continuity, but similarly named finishes from different manufacturers may not match exactly.

Creating connections throughout your home

You can repeat metal details through brass hooks, wall lights, switches and sockets or door handles. Compare the actual finish and each product's intended use; brass-coloured fittings are not necessarily made from the same material.

There is no minimum number of rooms you need to coordinate. Our article on brass in the home offers more ideas.

Refreshing furniture and cabinets

New cabinet handles or brass knobs can change the character of a wardrobe, sideboard or bedside table. Check the fixing arrangement and whether the new fitting covers existing marks. See our chest-of-drawers guide for inspiration.

Caring for the finish

Follow the care instructions for your exact product. Use a soft cloth and avoid abrasive pads, steel wool and aggressive cleaning products. Where a lightly damp cloth is permitted, dry the surface afterwards. Do not use metal polish on a darkened or coated finish unless the manufacturer explicitly recommends it: polishing may alter the intended surface.

Wipe away splashes and avoid getting cleaning products from nearby cabinet fronts onto the handles. A dark finish is not a guarantee against fingerprints, uneven ageing or other surface changes.

Frequently asked questions

Does burnished brass suit a white kitchen?

Yes, its darker tone can add contrast and warmth. Compare it with your fronts and worktop in the room's lighting.

Will it stay the same colour?

That depends on the finish, coating and use. Check the individual product; do not assume that all burnished brass ages in the same way.

How is it different from brushed brass?

Burnished describes a darkened appearance here; brushed describes a fine surface texture. Colour, texture and protective treatment are separate characteristics.

Can I use it in a bathroom?

Only choose products specified for the intended location and conditions. Colour alone does not establish moisture resistance.
