Greb til kommode: opgrader dine møbler med nye håndtag

Start with the existing holes

Measure between the centres of the two screw holes, not the total length of the old handle. Dimensions such as 64, 96 and 128 mm are examples, not a guarantee of your furniture's measurements. To reuse holes, choose the exact matching hole centres and check the fixing method, screw thread, front thickness and screw length too.

A single existing hole may suit a knob. Most conventional bow handles use two fixings. Compare the product's installation drawing with the furniture rather than assuming that a similar-looking handle will fit.

Style and material

Consider the furniture's colour and surface as well as the surrounding room. Brass can contrast with dark wood, while a slim black handle can stand out on a white front. Our furniture knob guide offers more ideas.

Size, proportion and grip

Compare the handle's overall length, projection and finger clearance with the drawer front. A longer handle or a pair of knobs may suit a wide drawer, but the existing holes and practical opening action matter too. Use a paper template to assess the proportions; there is no single size ratio that works for every drawer. Check that neighbouring doors and drawers can open freely.

Handles or knobs?

Bow handles generally provide space for several fingers and usually have two fixing points. Knobs are compact and commonly use one. Try the shape and consider how much effort the drawer takes to open. You can combine both types while keeping a shared finish, provided the fittings suit each front.

Explore different materials

Alongside brass, consider porcelain, marble or wood. Natural materials can vary in appearance. Read the specifications and care advice for the actual product. Our porcelain knob guide explores a softer, classic expression.

Choose for the room

Bedroom

Muted finishes and simple shapes can support a calm setting; stronger contrasts can make the chest a focal point.

Hallway

Consider frequent use, comfortable grip and a suitable finish. Matching brass hooks can connect the furniture with the wall above. See our guide to brass in the home.

Living room

Sculptural shapes, marble knobs or selected contrasting finishes can echo other details in the room.

Fitting, step by step

  1. Inspect how the old fitting is attached and remove it carefully according to its design.
  2. Measure hole centres and front thickness; check the new fitting's instructions and required screws.
  3. Position the fitting and tighten as directed, without overtightening or damaging the finish. Use washers only where appropriate for the specified assembly.
  4. Check that the handle is secure and the drawer or door opens freely.

If new holes are needed, check the front's material and construction first. Mark carefully, confirm alignment and use an appropriate drilling method and support to reduce breakout. Tape alone does not guarantee a clean hole. Seek help if unsure, especially with fragile or valuable furniture.

Care

Follow the instructions for the exact finish rather than the material name alone. Uncoated brass may develop patina, while lacquered or plated finishes need different treatment. Read our patina guide. Porcelain, wood, marble, black finishes and steel also have product-specific care requirements; do not assume they are scratch-proof or maintenance-free.

Frequently asked questions

Which hole centres do I need?

Measure centre to centre and compare with the product drawing, then check the other fixing dimensions.

Are handles or knobs better?

Choose according to the holes, grip and opening action. Neither is best for every drawer.

What suits vintage furniture?

Burnished or antique-style brass, porcelain and wood are options to compare with the original style.

Can I avoid drilling?

Often, if the existing holes and all fixing requirements are compatible. Matching hole centres alone is not the whole check.

How many should I order?

Count the planned fittings on every front. Some drawers use two knobs, so one fitting per front is not a universal rule.

Find handles for your furniture

Browse chest of drawers handles and furniture knobs. Whether the furniture is from IKEA, HTH or a second-hand find, measure the specific piece rather than relying on the brand. If unsure, contact us with measurements and photos. New handles can also complete a repainting project without replacing the whole piece of furniture.
