Messing dørhåndtag: det klassiske valg til hjemmet

Brass handles for interior doors

Interior door handles in brass bring a warm detail to bedrooms, living rooms and hallways. Repeat the tone in cabinet handles or hooks, or use it as a contrast to the rest of the room. For a bathroom, check the finish's suitability and the required privacy-lock fittings.

Our interior door handle guide helps you compare types and mounting requirements.

Choosing a handle for the front door

A brass handle can create a welcoming entrance, but the colour or base material alone does not establish outdoor suitability. Choose a model specifically approved by its manufacturer for the door, lock and exposure involved. Solid brass and brushed brass are not alternatives: one describes the material and the other the surface texture.

Weather, moisture and handling can affect an unprotected finish. Lacquer or another coating is not in itself a guarantee of outdoor performance. Check any requirements for security, fire-rated or other special doors before replacing their hardware.

Brushed, polished, antique and burnished brass

  • Brushed: fine surface texture and a softer reflection. It is not necessarily fingerprint-proof.
  • Polished: a reflective, golden appearance. Care depends on whether it is lacquered or untreated.
  • Antique: a deliberately aged appearance; the treatment varies by product.
  • Burnished: a darker treated finish. Read our burnished brass guide.

Compare the particular finish in your room's lighting. Brass can complement both modern white doors and traditional woodwork; there is no requirement to use a particular finish for a particular style.

Lever handles and fixed pulls

A lever handle moves to operate the latch. A fixed pull does not operate a latch in the same way. The Danish terms “dørgreb” and “dørhåndtag” are often used interchangeably, so do not rely on the name alone to distinguish them. Check the product's function, mounting and lock compatibility.

Fixing centres: 30 mm or 38 mm?

These measurements may refer to the centre-to-centre spacing of fixing holes in the rose. They are not universal standards for every door, country or door age, and they are not the distance from a handle to a keyhole.

Measure your actual fittings and check the lock, spindle dimensions, door thickness, rose size and screw arrangement. Read our guide to 30 and 38 mm fixing centres. If the information is unclear, send us the measurements and photographs before ordering.

Arne Jacobsen door handles

If you like a sculptural, pared-back form, explore the Arne Jacobsen collection and our design guide. Check the individual product for the available finish, fixing dimensions and contents of the set rather than assuming every combination is offered.

Installing a replacement

Start with the manufacturer's instructions and our door handle installation guide. Confirm compatibility before removing the old fittings. Use the specified spindle, screws and fixings; the door's thickness matters.

Support the fittings while removing them, fit the new set as directed and avoid overtightening. Test the handle, latch and any lock with the door open before closing it. Installation time varies, and a locksmith or other qualified professional may be needed for unfamiliar or specialist doors.

Care and patina

Follow the instructions for the exact surface. Use a soft cloth and only the cleaning method approved for the finish. Avoid abrasive products and aggressive chemicals.

Do not polish a handle solely because it looks shiny. Polish can damage lacquer, remove an intentional dark finish or change the surface. Only use it when permitted for that product. Unlacquered brass can be allowed to develop a patina; there is no universal yearly polishing schedule.

Connect the details throughout your home

You can echo your door handles in cabinet handles, hallway hooks, doorstops and suitable switches and sockets. Check the actual finishes and installation requirements. Our brass-in-the-home guide offers further inspiration.

Price, quality and the number of sets

Compare construction, ergonomics, finish, compatibility and what is included—not price or weight alone. Check whether a listing contains a pair, roses, spindle, screws or separate lock fittings. Count the doors and their different functions before ordering. Trying one compatible set can help you assess the look and feel before replacing handles throughout the home.

Frequently asked questions

Can brass handles be used outdoors?

Only choose a product confirmed suitable for its intended outdoor use and door specification.

Should I choose 30 or 38 mm?

Measure the relevant fixing centres and compare all fitting dimensions. Do not choose by the age or country of origin of the door alone.

Are all brass handles maintained in the same way?

No. The finish and protective treatment determine the care requirements.

Does brass suit a modern home?

Yes. Its warm colour can contrast with pale walls and simple forms; choose the shape and finish you prefer.
