The design behind the handle
Arne Jacobsen designed the AJ lever handle in 1956. It became part of his integrated design for Copenhagen's SAS Royal Hotel in 1960. The curved form relates to the hand that operates it, making an everyday fitting part of the architecture. The handle is produced today by d line.
Recognising the AJ handle
The AJ handle is known for its flowing, rounded profile. When comparing models, distinguish it from Knud Holscher's L handle: the two are separate designs, not two AJ variants. The lever's shape also does not determine whether its rose is round or square.
Look at the exact product photographs and drawings rather than choosing by a broad description such as “Danish designer handle”. Consider how the grip feels, its projection from the door and the room around it.
Materials and finishes
Compare the listed options in the current AJ range. Brass tones bring warmth, steel has a cooler metallic appearance, and darker finishes can create contrast. Availability depends on the particular model and fixing arrangement; not every combination is necessarily offered.
Separate the base material from the finish. A brass-, bronze- or copper-coloured surface is not automatically solid brass, bronze or copper. Check the product description for the material, coating and care requirements.
Unlacquered brass and protective surface treatments do not age in the same way. Read our article on brass patina, then follow the care instructions for the actual handle rather than applying general polishing advice.
Choosing handles for interior doors
The AJ design can provide a consistent detail across adjoining rooms. Check each variant's specified use before choosing it for interior doors, a bathroom or an entrance door. Appearance alone does not establish suitability for moisture, weather or a special door assembly.
Our interior door-handle guide explains the wider selection process. Repeating a finish is one way to connect rooms, but a deliberate mix can also work.
Fixing centres: 30 or 38 mm?
For the roses discussed here, c/c refers to the distance between the centres of the fixing holes. Check the 30 or 38 mm arrangement specified on the selected item rather than assuming a standard from the door's age or country.
Measure the existing holes and compare the manufacturer's drawing. Also check spindle size and length, door thickness, lock compatibility, screw requirements and whether the rose covers old marks. Matching the fixing centres alone does not prove that the set fits.
See our guide to fixing-hole centres. Do not drill new holes or modify a lock case without checking the installation instructions.
Plan the installation
Read the product instructions before removing existing hardware. Confirm the supplied parts and any separate privacy or key fittings. Replacement may be straightforward when the door and hardware match, but there is no reliable five-minute promise for every door.
Keep the door open and supported while working. Fit the spindle, roses and fasteners in the specified order, then test free lever movement, latch operation and any privacy release before closing the door. Stop if parts bind or do not fit. For fire-rated or other special doors, obtain confirmation of hardware suitability before changing anything.
Comparing with other designs
Compare shape, material, finish, supplied parts, care requirements and documented performance. The AJ handle's design history is a reason to consider it, not proof that every alternative has inferior materials. If you prefer a warm metal tone, also explore brass door handles.
Connect details throughout your home
You can repeat a warm finish through cabinet handles, hooks, wall lights and switches and sockets. Similar finish names across brands do not guarantee identical colours or materials.

Styling and practical details
Dark handles can stand out against pale doors, while warm metallic tones complement wood and stone. Compare the finish in your room's lighting. A suitably positioned doorstop can help prevent the handle from hitting the wall; check its installation and contact point.
Frequently asked questions
Does “handle” mean a complete set?
Product names alone do not establish the contents. Check whether the listing is for a pair or a single handle and which roses, spindle, screws and locking accessories are included.
Should I choose 30 or 38 mm?
Measure and compare the exact fixing arrangement, then check the other compatibility requirements too.
Can I use it outdoors?
Only choose a variant specified for the conditions and door concerned. Check material, finish and any relevant installation requirements.
Which finish suits a modern home?
A cooler or darker tone can emphasise the form, while brass tones add warmth. Choose alongside your door, wall and other fittings.
Can I install it myself?
That depends on the door, selected hardware and your experience. Follow the instructions and seek installation help if compatibility or safe operation is uncertain.
