Small details, daily use
Handles are both visible details and fittings you touch every day. A coordinated shape or finish can change the kitchen's character. Before replacing them, check the fronts' condition and whether the new fittings are compatible.
Measure hole centres
For a conventional two-hole handle, measure between the centres of the existing screw holes, not the handle's total length. Dimensions such as 96, 128, 160, 192, 224, 320 and 416 mm are examples to compare with product specifications, not a sizing rule for your kitchen. Do not infer the measurement from a brand such as IKEA.
To reuse the holes, match their centres exactly and check front thickness, screw thread and length, mounting method, projection and clearance. Profile and edge-mounted handles may use a different fixing arrangement. Compare the drawing for the actual handle.
Materials and finishes
- Brass offers warm tones. Compare polished, brushed and burnished finishes, including coatings and care. See our brass kitchen handle guide.
- Black finishes can create contrast on pale fronts or a tonal effect on dark ones. Read our black handle guide.
- Steel handles bring a cooler metallic expression. Check the exact finish and care requirements.
- Porcelain knobs can complement classic or country-style kitchens.
- Wooden knobs and handles add natural texture; compare species and treatment.
A material name alone does not establish hygiene performance, durability or resistance to marks.
Which type suits the front?
Bow handles
Conventional bow handles generally have two fixing points and space for several fingers. Check finger clearance and how much force the front requires to open.
Profile handles
These give a linear expression, but mounting details vary. Check front thickness, fixing positions and the clearance needed at the edge.
Knobs
Knobs are compact and commonly use one fixing. They can work on doors or drawers when the grip and mounting suit the application. They are not restricted to small doors.
You can combine handles on drawers with knobs on doors, keeping a shared finish. Try to choose by comfort and compatibility rather than appearance alone.
Positioning
On hinged doors, place the fitting on the opening side opposite the hinges, at an accessible height. Upper and lower cabinets have different reach requirements; left- or right-handedness alone does not determine the side. On drawers, a centred position can create visual balance, but assess reach and the drawer's operation before drilling. Tall doors do not automatically need two handles.
Use a template to compare positions and check consistency across the kitchen. Make sure neighbouring fronts, walls and appliances do not collide with the handles.
Match the style
Slender steel or black designs can support a minimalist look; brass or chrome can complement a classic kitchen; porcelain and antique-style finishes can suit a country setting. Wood and subdued finishes can work in Scandinavian interiors. These are design options, not rules. The same measuring principles apply to cabinet handles elsewhere, with product-specific suitability checks for damp locations.
Fitting
- Inspect and carefully remove the existing fitting according to its design.
- Check measurements and clean the surrounding area using a method suitable for the front.
- Fit the new handle with the specified screws and mounting method.
- Tighten without overtightening and check secure attachment and free opening.
If new holes are needed, select a drilling method for the front's material and construction. Mark and check positions before drilling; tape alone does not guarantee against splintering. Ask for help if the surface or fitting method is uncertain.
Frequently asked questions
What hole centres do I need?
Measure your actual holes. A kitchen brand or a common dimension is not enough.
Handles or knobs?
Compare grip, fixing points and clearance for each front.
Can I avoid drilling?
Often, if the existing holes and all other fixing requirements match.
What suits a modern kitchen?
Simple shapes and selected finishes can give a clean expression; choose dimensions that fit the front.
How many should I order?
Count the planned fittings on every door and drawer and record the measurements separately. Different fronts may need different models or sizes.
