Moderne lysekroner: det centrale blickfang i stuen

What defines a modern chandelier?

Modern chandeliers can combine simple geometric or organic shapes with glass, metal or wood. Some are understated; others are deliberately playful. The way they distribute light matters just as much as their appearance. LED and dimmer compatibility depend on the individual model.

Nuura Miira

The Miira collection combines mouth-blown glass with metal. Its different arrangements include circular designs and grouped pendants, so choose the version that suits your room rather than assuming every Miira has the same shape or light distribution.

Size and ceiling height

Consider the fixture's full dimensions and suspension range, not just its diameter. With a low ceiling, a compact design or a suitable close-to-ceiling light may work better. A taller room can offer space for a larger composition, provided the support and installation are suitable.

Above the dining table

Match the scale and shape to the table and room. Check sightlines, glare and clearance when people sit down, stand up or move around. There is no single diameter-to-table ratio or hanging height that works for every design. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and assess the actual space before fixing the position.

In the living room

A chandelier can form part of the general lighting, complemented by wall lights, table lamps and floor lamps. Read our wall lighting guide. Do not assume a chandelier alone will provide enough light everywhere.

Pendants as an alternative

A single pendant or a group of pendants can also become a focal point over the dining table. Compare the overall composition, proportions and light distribution with those of a chandelier.

Choosing the light source

Check the required base, permitted power, dimensions and other specifications. If you want dimming, the fixture, light source and control must work together. Our light-source guide explains what to consider.

Bedroom and entrance hall

In the bedroom, consider a compact design with comfortable light and suitable controls. Diffusing glass or a shade can soften the appearance of the light. In a hallway, prioritise clear passage, door movement and headroom; a close-to-ceiling design may suit a smaller space.

Organic shapes and brass details

Glass spheres, flower-like forms and curved metal structures offer alternatives to traditional crystal designs. Consider brass-coloured details or tinted glass as part of your colour palette, rather than choosing solely by trends. Combine suitable finishes with brass handles or brass wall lights for continuity.

Care and maintenance

Follow the care instructions for the specific fixture and finish. Do not assume that damp cleaning or household cleaners are suitable for every surface. Before cleaning or changing a replaceable light source, follow the manufacturer's instructions for disconnecting power and allowing the fixture to cool. Check compatibility before fitting a replacement.

Frequently asked questions

How high should it hang? Choose according to the model, room and use. Preserve safe clearance and sightlines rather than relying on one universal measurement.
Which size should I choose? Compare the full dimensions with the room and table. A cardboard outline can help you assess the visual scale.
Can it work with a low ceiling? A compact or close-to-ceiling model may be suitable; check dimensions and clearance.
Which bulb should I use? Follow the fixture's specifications, including dimming requirements where applicable.
What is the difference between a chandelier and a pendant? A chandelier often groups several lights in one composition. A pendant is a suspended fixture and may have one or several light sources; the categories overlap.

Plan the room's lighting

The number of bulbs alone does not establish whether a room will be adequately lit. Consider lumen output, light distribution, room surfaces and the activities taking place. Layer general, task and accent lighting. Where the equipment supports it, dimming lets you adjust the atmosphere throughout the day.
