Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen's design legacy

Arne Jacobsen helped shape Danish modernism through an approach that brought appearance and function together. His designs combine clear lines, carefully considered forms and attention to detail.

For Jacobsen, design was more than decoration: it had to serve a purpose. This outlook connected the practical needs of everyday life with a coherent visual expression. The enduring appeal of his work continues to inspire designers and architects.

Trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Jacobsen worked across architecture and interiors. At the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, this approach extended from the building to its furniture and door handles, creating a closely coordinated whole.

From distinctive door handles to celebrated furniture

The door handle developed for the SAS Royal Hotel reflects this attention to both use and appearance. Its simple, curved form is designed around the hand and brings a subtle architectural detail to a room.

Arne Jacobsen door handles show how a small fitting can contribute to a building's overall character. Their recognisable form makes them part of the interior rather than merely a practical addition.

Jacobsen also designed the Egg and Swan chairs for the hotel. Their sculptural forms are among his best-known furniture designs and illustrate the same connection between comfort, function and visual identity. They are mentioned here as part of his design history, not as a statement of availability in this collection.
